A Foodie's Introduction to Thai Cuisine

The star: rice

For centuries, rice has been the key ingredient in Thai cuisine...

Everyone keeps talking about Pad Thai, but did you know it wasn't even of Thai origin? I mean, sure. Thai people invented it. But "noodles" came with the Chinese immigrants in the 1850s. Before that, it was all rice.

The key to the taste that made the Thai cuisine the world's favorite is BALANCE.  Achieving the perfect balance between salty, sour, and sweet is crucial.

Each Thai dish is also characterized by the region from which it came. Central, Northeastern, Northern, and Southern dishes can taste very different from each other.

Standard Thai cuisine uses Jasmine rice, plainly cooked and eaten with one or multiple side dishes.

Northern cuisine is characterized by the use of sticky rice and vegetables, fresh or boiled, eaten with a variety of chili pastes.

Sticky rice dominates the dishes in the Northeast.  Another important ingredient is crushed toasted rice, added to the spicy salad dishes, giving them a distinctly Northeastern aroma.

At first glance, southern food looks just like central region food. Mainly Jasmine rice, cooked and eaten with side dishes.  But once you taste them, the spices will hit you like a train.
