From Ao Nang to Railay Beach: The Complete 2026 Guide

Did you know that while you need a boat to get to Railay Beach, it’s not an island? I thought it was an island for ages, and I’m from this country! 🤦🏻‍♀️

The Railay Peninsula is part of the mainland in Krabi, but thanks to the province’s picturesque limestone mountains, some parts of the land are blocked off from road access. Railay is one of those.

If you’re wondering how to get from Ao Nang to Railay Beach or whether it’s worth the boat ride, I’ve got you covered.

Let me show you exactly where and how to get your boat tickets in Ao Nang, what to do on Railay, and how to get back!

Why Leave From Ao Nang, Specifically?

You can actually get to Railay from a handful of beaches around Krabi, but the most convenient way is by a longtail boat from Ao Nang.

With 3 beaches and a handful of activities available in Railay, I’d recommend staying overnight as well if you want to explore everything. I’ll provide hotel recommendations at the end.

There are no piers on Ao Nang nor Railay, so you’ll be waddling through seawater, which gets up to your waist at higher tides, to and from the boat. Yes, I learned this fact the hard way… 😂

How to Get From Ao Nang to Railay

Unless you’re staying in Ao Nang, below are the ways you can get to Ao Nang from other places. If you are staying in Ao Nang, feel free to scroll down to “Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service Club.”

Step 1: Getting to Ao Nang

From Krabi

From any other parts of Krabi, the best way to get there from any other part of Krabi is by GrabTaxi. However, if Grab isn’t available where you are, you can always use the local passenger trucks or taxis and pay them an hourly rate instead.

From Neighboring Provinces

Southern Thailand is pretty compact. You can easily reach Krabi from Phuket, Phang Nga, or even Nakhon Si Thammarat in under 3 hours. Use the search tool below to find yourself a ride.

From Further Away

Fly into Krabi airport and take a GrabTaxi to Ao Nang. Search for flights HERE.

Step 2: Finding the Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service Club

Perched at the end of Highway 4203 that runs into Ao Nang, the ticketing booth itself is pretty inconspicuous, if not for the bright orange sign above it. Just look up and you can’t miss it!

Step 3: Buying Your Tickets

The tickets are 2 frail pieces of paper, so please hold on to them for dear life. If you’re buying a round-trip ticket, stick it in your wallet to be safe.

• One-Way Ticket: 100 THB (US$2.7)
• Round-Trip Ticket: 200 THB (US$5.4)
  • For round-trip tickets, please get back to the boat by 6 pm the same day, or you will be stuck on Railay Beach for the night, or you’ll have to pay heaps for a boatman to come and pick you up.

Extra Tip for Round-Trip Ticket Holders

I recommend being back on Railay West by 5:30 PM at the latest. Show your return ticket to any of the boatmen waiting on the beach, and they’ll tell you which one is taking you back.

Step 4: Boarding the Longtail Boat

Once you’ve bought a ticket, carry it over to the boatmen waiting by the entrance to the beach. The ticket person will point you to whichever boat will take you. They usually don’t depart until there are at least 7-8 people. So, depending on the timing, you sometimes have to wait a little bit.

The boat ride itself takes about 15 minutes. You’ll likely get splashed often, especially if the waves are stronger on the day. This is where a waterproof bag will come in handy.

Introduction to Railay Peninsula’s 3 Beaches

Known widely as Railay Beach, Railay is actually a peninsula consisting of 3 different beaches. Before we dive into the sights and activities, I’ll introduce you to the peninsula first.

Railay Beach West: Chill Vibes and Sunset View

Coming from Ao Nang, your longtail boat will stop here for both arrival and departure. The beach itself is not a sight to behold (except for the sunset, of course!), but it has the best vibe for chilling at a bar and grabbing a drink, in my opinion.

Railay Beach East: Tourist Pier and Cave Access

Walk through the inland paths packed with shops and resorts from Railay West, and you’ll come to Railay East, where the only real pier exists on the entire peninsula. The walk takes around 10 minutes.

Accessible only via Railay East is the hidden beach at the tip of the peninsula, Phra Nang Beach. Facing the beach, look to the limestone mountains to your right and walk there. Follow the path through the cave, and you’ll emerge on Phra Nang.

Phra Nang Beach: Swimming, Myth, and Rock Climbing

This hidden beach is inarguably the highlight of your time on Railay. It has the bluest water with the most beautiful limestone mountains and a beachside cave.

The Local Myth

One of the first things you’ll see when you make it to Phra Nang Beach is a small cave tucked into the limestone wall.

There sits a spirit house surrounded by wooden amulets in the shape of a certain male organ. Let’s talk about this (LOL) because I’ve heard way too many people getting super confused!

“Phra Nang” (พระนาง) is a high honorific term in Thai used to call a female royal or a goddess. The spirit house is home to the revered Goddess of Fertility.

To pay respect and ask her for children, the locals offer her “Palad Khik” (ปลัดขิก), a type of wooden amulet in the shape of the male reproductive organ. These offerings are purely out of respect, and the correct amulets are made out of wood ONLY.

Some tourists have misunderstood and thought it would be okay to put a “plastic toy” there. Please don’t.

7 Best Things to Do on the Railay Peninsula

Here comes the best part. Get ready to take notes!

1. Chill with a Drink by the Sea

This might sound basic at first glance, but grabbing a drink while looking out at the sea on Railay West is the vibe.

For those staying overnight at Rayavadee, however, you’ll have access to the famous “cave restaurant,” The Grotto. Grabbing a drink and looking out from Phra Nang is even more gorgeous!

There are more options inland and even more among the resorts up in the mountains as well.

2. Watch the Sunset on Railay West

If you don’t have to rush back to the boat by 6 pm, why not combine that glass of drink (or, you know, coconut) with the magnificent sunset view on Railay West?

3. Swim at Phra Nang Beach (But Watch Those Rocks!)

Phra Nang Beach is the best option for swimming. But a word of caution, the underwater rocks are SHARP. So be very careful not to quickly put your feet down anywhere while swimming. Watch your balance while walking back to the beach, and don’t get toppled over by waves.

If you do get cut by the rocks, then, well, that’s why I recommended packing the first-aid kit. 😅

4. Go Rock Climbing on the Beach (What?)

Another cool thing you can do on Phra Nang Beach is rock climbing! Yup. Krabi is that cool place where rock climbing on a beach is possible!

Want to try but have never climbed a rock in your life? Not to worry, this rock-climbing tour will take you to Railay for a rock-climbing adventure and then back, so you can travel worry-free!

5. Visit the Phra Nang Nai Cave (Diamond Cave)

If you’re more of an adventure person than a beach person, walk north along Railay East and make your way to Phra Nang Nai Cave (Diamond Cave). It’s not big, so it shouldn’t take you more than 15-20 minutes to explore.

The rock formations inside are especially stunning. However, there is a 200 THB admission fee.

6. Hike to the Viewpoint (If It’s Dry!)

Right between Phra Nang Beach and Railay East, there’s a strenuous hiking trail up to the viewpoint. The “hike” always looks to me like half rock climbing and half hiking.

I personally haven’t been up there since I was always on Railay when the dirt was a bit wet, and I didn’t want to risk sliding. (Just my luck, really.)

But I’ve been told it’s nice up there. Maybe you can go and come back to let me know!

7. Spot Monkeys and Local Wildlife

Another amazing thing about Krabi is all the furry friends you will run into, no matter what part of the province you go to. Railay is no exception!

From birds to monkeys, you’ll see adorable friends along the trails all over the peninsula. But do keep in mind that it’s illegal to feed the monkeys, and they do get aggressive.
