Basic Thai Words for Tourists: Speak Without Full Sentences

Worried you’ll butcher your Thai phrases so badly, you’re stuck pointing at menus and hoping for the best? I feel you.

I mean, I’m a native speaker, but are we really mindful, immersive travelers if we’re not terrified of butchering someone else’s language when traveling? 😂

To help you enjoy my home country more, I’ve compiled this list of basic Thai words for tourists that will work without full sentences. Yup, just words! You can even combine them with gestures, like how we all told the adults what we wanted when we were children.

From how to say words like flight and schedule to ordering food with single-syllable words, this online travel friend’s got you covered. Let’s get you speaking some easy Thai!

The Point of This Vocabulary List

I used to teach Thai to foreigners, and I saw so many students getting nervous when trying to speak full sentences.

You see, we have lexical tones in our language, and that gets exponentially more complicated the longer the sentence is.

So to help you communicate more easily while minimizing phrase-butchering, we’re going back to the real basics. Just like when we were children, we’re gonna communicate with very short, but highly situational, words!

These will become extra helpful if you plan to travel to more remote towns, where fewer locals speak English. Keep in mind that they appreciate effort. You’ll be fine as long as your intention is clear.

Thai Language Basics: Sentence Endings and Tones

The two things you need to understand about the Thai language before using it are “sentence endings” and “lexical tones.”

Sentence Endings to Sound Polite

There are speech levels in Thai. The 2 important ones you need to know are Casual Speech AND how to make it polite, since you’ll likely be talking to strangers.

To make anything polite, we add ONE simple syllable to the end of the sentence. I will call this the “sentence ending.” If you’re a woman, you’ll use one word. And if you’re a man, you’ll use a different word for the same thing.

• For a woman: Add KÀ (ค่ะ) to every sentence.
• For a man: Add KRÁB (ครับ) to every sentence.

Under NO circumstances will a woman ever use kráb and vice versa. Later in this post, I will list out every phrase with both endings INCLUDED. You’re free to focus only on the one you’ll be using.

NOTE: For the sake of this post, know that the endings are not required when you’re just saying ONE WORD. Be sure to soften your tone and facial expression so you come across as polite.

Understanding Thai Tones (Simplified)

There are 5 lexical tones in Thai. Unlike English or most other languages that flow according to the speaker’s mood, these tones are word-specific. Get the tone wrong, and the meaning changes to a completely different word.

Below, I’ve listed out the 5 tones and how I’ll mark them in this post so you know the distinctions.

• Level Tone: Monotonic pitch, I’ll write words with this tone with “ā”.
• Low Tone: The pitch slides downward. I’ll mark these with “à.”
• Falling Tone: The pitch goes up, then back down. I’ll mark these with “â.”
• High Tone: The pitch goes straight up, like the last syllable of a sentence when you’re not sure if you understand something correctly. I’ll mark these with “á.”
• Rising Tone: The pitch drops and then comes back up, like a dip. I’ll mark these with “ă.”

Essential Thai Phrases to Use with the Words

Although we’re mainly talking about words, these phrases below are very short and necessary for survival.

• ขอโทษนะคะ/ครับ (kŏhtôde ná ká/kráb) | Excuse me.
• ใช่ค่ะ (châi kà/kráb) | Yes, correct. (Only for confirmation that something is accurate)
  • ค่ะ (kà/kráb) | Yes (affirmative)
• ไม่ใช่ค่ะ (mâi châi kà/kráb) | No, that’s not it. (Only for correction)
  • ไม่ค่ะ (mâi kà/kráb) | No (negative)

Now that you know how to get someone’s attention, affirm, or negate, you’re ready to communicate your needs with single words. Let’s go!

Worst comes to worst, you can always point at the menu and say “เอาอันนี้ค่ะ/ครับ” (āo-ān-níi-kà/kráb), which means “I’d like this one.”

Emergency Vocabulary

In this last section are words that will come in handy when you need help or are in danger. I hope you never have to use them, but better safe than sorry!
