A Guide to Pedra Bonita: One of Rio’s Calmest Trails
Hiking in Rio de Janeiro sounds like a dream… until you see those mountain peaks nearly disappearing into the clouds, and the last time you went to the gym was four months ago.
But not to worry, because there are easy trails for chill hikers, too. Pedra Bonita in one of them!
The trail is one of the easiest hikes in Rio, with much less elevation than other famous trails. I saw plenty of local parents carrying their young toddlers up the trail both times I went up.
I put together this hiking guide to show you exactly how to reach the trailhead, how long the hike takes, what to bring, what to expect at the top, and where the best spots for photos are.
For adrenaline junkies, you can also do a tandem hang gliding off a platform nearby.
Without further ado, let’s get to know this trail a little better!
What Pedra Bonita Has to Offer
Its name, Pedra Bonita, literally means “Beautiful Rock,” and it delivers.
Once you clear the thick forest that shades the trail, you’ll find yourself on a clear, massive bedrock that gives you some of the less conventional views of Rio de Janeiro.
From up there, you’ll also get an epic close-up view of the neighboring Pedra da Gรกvea.
So in one simple answer, Pedra Bonita gives you equally epic views as its more famous hikes, without requiring the same amount of effort.

How to Get to Pedra Bonita
I’m a fan of the metro, and I prefer it to buses and Uber. So I’ll provide directions that involve the use of the metro, in conjunction with another form of transport for the last leg of the journey.
Keep in mind that if you’d prefer to take the bus from wherever you’re staying, the transit feature on Google Maps is your best friend!
By Metro + Bus (Most Budget-Friendly)
Take the metro line 4 to Sรฃo Conrado / Rocinha. Once there, use exit C, and you’ll find a bus stop for bus number 448 right outside.
That bus will take you right to the drop-off point. The journey should take a little over an hour.

By Metro + Uber (Most Efficient)
Combining the metro with an Uber ride is the best way to get there, logistically and economically.
Take the metro line 4 to Sรฃo Conrado and get an Uber from there to the drop-off point.
Uber or Taxi All the Way (Most Convenient)
Of course, you can also choose to take a taxi or an Uber from wherever you’re staying and straight to the drop-off.
While it is not the most economical method, it is definitely the most convenient.
Good-to-Know Tip: The Drop-Off Isn’t the Trailhead
As you’ll see in the photo below, the dropoff point is NOT the trailhead. In fact, most Ubers will refuse to drive up the steep road that leads to the official trailhead.

You’ll have to walk up that portion, which will be the most challenging part of the hike. This takes around 10 minutes if you can manage a steady pace.

Introduction to the Trail
To those who’ve done the more famous hikes like Morro Dois Irmรฃos or Corcovado already, Pedra Bonita will feel like walking. It is well-marked with much less elevation.
However, to help you have the best experience, let’s look at the numbers and set the right expectations.
Quick Trail Overview
- Distance (Round-trip): 1.6 mi (2.6 km)
- Elevation Change: 951 ft (290 m)
- Duration (Round-trip): Approx. 1 hour 30 minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
- Facilities on Trail: None
- Phone Service on Trail: Only at the top
Safety Precautions to Take
Sunscreen is very important! The top of this rock is completely exposed, and you definitely don’t want to get cooked up there.
Also, bring the usual: insect repellent, good shoes, water, and a hat for extra protection.
What to Expect on the Trail
After about 10 minutes of the steep climb you never asked for (hah), you’ll see the official trailhead on your right. It’s well-marked with an information board and an abandoned security cabin.
A few steps up from the cabin is a small restaurant. I recommend using the bathroom here before you continue. It should cost R$3 and is well-maintained.

The hike from here is a calm but steady climb, with some flat portions for you to catch your breath.
The first 10 minutes are well paved with rocks, which could also mean a twisted ankle if you’re not careful with your steps. But I love them much more than loose soil that you could slip on.

The rock-paved section of the trail disappears pretty soon, and you’re left with a much more traditional-looking trail up to the top. This should take you about 30 minutes at a steady pace.
Tip: Look Out for Micos
Also, be on the lookout for Micos, the tiny monkey! They are adorable, but keep in mind that feeding wildlife is illegal in most countries on this planet.
If you run into them, never put your hands in your pockets or bag, or they’ll think you have food and jump on you.

Views to Expect at the Top
The first moment you emerge from the forest onto the top of the rock is amazing. Pedra Bonita is MASSIVE and is a big park in itself, which is great because it never feels too crowded.
East Side: The South Zone and Famous Landmarks
To your left is the view of the South Zone (Zona Sul) from afar and all the main landmarks like Morro Dois Irmรฃos, Christ the Redeemer, Pรฃo de Aรงucar, as well as a little bit of Ipanema Beach.
Pedra Bonita is also a hang-gliding base, so you will see hang-gliders take off into Sรฃo Conrado from somewhere below you on this side of the rock.

Directly South: The Pedra da Gรกvea Close-Up
Right in front of you is the majestic Pedra da Gรกvea, one of the tallest peaks in the city, with a flat, table-like rock at the top.
You will have seen it from other parts of Rio de Janeiro, of course. But it looks much grander up close!

West Side: Barra da Tijuca and Tijuca Lagoon
The best part that makes Pedra Bonita different (apart from being child-friendly) is to your right: A stunning view of Rio’s West Zone (Zona Oeste) with the Tijuca Lagoon in all its glory.
You’ll also see Ilha da Gigรณia closer to you!

Best Spots for Photos
Head straight to the little slab of rock right in front of Pedra da Gรกvea for the most stunning background you can get.
My favorite spot is further to the West Zone. Walk along the massive rock to the Tijuca Lagoon and find a comfortable place to sit, looking out at the view while your best friend snaps the shot!

Getting Back Down (Don’t Miss the Bus!)
Coming back down the trail is pretty simple! You go back the same way you came up.
The trickiest part is catching the 448 bus back to Sรฃo Conrado. Because of the scarce transportation needs on the route, the bus only comes once every hour or so.
Bus Timing Tip
I recommend waiting by the drop-off point by the 45-minute mark of each hour, just to make sure you don’t miss your bus back.
However, the good news is that there are always taxis waiting to take people.
If you end up having to use a taxi, the best way to check for a fair price is to put your route into Uber and make sure the taxi’s price matches, or is not too much higher.
Guided Experiences at Pedra Bonita
If you prefer a bit more convenience, consider going with a tour guide.
This Tijuca National Park tour will pick you up from any hotel in the South Zone (Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Lagoa, Jardim Botรขnico, Botafogo) and take you all the way to the trail.

I mentioned that Pedra Bonita is also a hang-gliding base, right?
Since you have to arrive in Sรฃo Conrado anyway, why not do a tandem flight first, eat something, and then hike in the afternoon?

More Ideas For Your Time in Rio de Janeiro
The whole Pedra Bonita hike shouldn’t take you longer than 2-3 hours, even if you plan to spend some time up top to take in the view. It basically takes one afternoon.
So… what should you do with the rest of your time in Rio?
Here are some ideas, I equally love Parque Lage (not the mansion, but the forest behind it) and Ilha da Gigรณia for how peaceful they are.
For more cultural experiences, Palรกcio do Catete was one of my favorite underrated gem.
If you have exactly four days in the city, that’s even easier! Just follow my 4-day itinerary that makes sure you get all the best of Rio, from top sights to local hangout spots!
No, that’s not all. I have more ideas on my Brazil Travel page if you wanna check them out!
